Building on a Tradition of Success
One championship season would be enough for most school districts. Buford City Schools somehow turned one of its strongest years ever into motivation for an even bigger one.
Success has become an expectation across Buford City Schools, but the 2025-2026 school year still managed to stand out. From state championships and national rankings to record-breaking academic achievements and award-winning fine arts programs, students found ways to keep adding new chapters to an already impressive legacy. Under the leadership of first-year Superintendent Amy Chafin, the district enters the new school year with a simple goal: keep chasing excellence.
Winning Happens Everywhere
Athletics grabbed plenty of headlines, and for good reason. The football team finished a perfect 15-0 season, claimed the Class 6A state title, and earned the program's first-ever No. 1 national ranking in multiple polls. Softball wrapped up a flawless 36-0 season, captured another state championship, and added the program's fourth national championship. Girls track, boys lacrosse, wrestling, gymnastics, cheerleading, tennis, soccer, baseball, volleyball, and riflery all contributed to another remarkable year that helped Buford earn the 2026 GADA Director's Cup as Georgia's top overall Class 6A athletic program. Even beyond the trophies, a record 63 seniors signed collegiate athletic scholarships.
The applause didn't stop when the stadium lights went out.
Buford's Literary Team claimed its 24th straight Region Championship and third consecutive State Championship. Theatre earned Region and State titles for their production of Urinetown, while chorus, band, and dance students continued collecting All-State honors and Governor's Honors Program recognition. Those achievements helped Buford earn the GHSA Ray Horne Award as Georgia's top Class 6A Fine Arts program, along with being named one of the nation's Best Communities for Music Education for the second year in a row.
Excellence That Lasts Beyond Graduation
Inside the classroom, students continued pushing academic expectations higher. Buford High School received six College Board AP Honor distinctions, earned AP Gold Honor School recognition, and achieved Platinum status for maximizing college credit opportunities. Students also brought home numerous state and national honors through career and technical organizations, reinforcing the district's commitment to preparing graduates for whatever comes next.
Taken separately, the championships, awards, and academic honors are impressive. Together, they paint a picture of what makes Buford City Schools stand out. Students are encouraged to excel whether they're solving equations, stepping onto a stage, or competing under Friday night lights, backed by educators, families, city leaders, and a community that continues investing in their success.
As another school year gets underway, the district isn't simply defending an impressive reputation. It's building on it, with the same mindset Superintendent Amy Chafin summed up best: stay hungry, put the right people in the right places, and always chase excellence.
