Lake it Easy!

By August, most people have settled into its familiar summer rhythm: hot afternoons, late sunsets and the growing suspicion that anything worth doing should probably involve water. Fortunately, Lake Lanier makes a respectable lake day possible without packing a suitcase or surrendering half the weekend to interstate traffic.

For locals, the southern end of Lanier offers an easy choose-your-own-adventure. You can fish before breakfast, rent a boat by lunch and be sitting beside the water with something cold in hand by late afternoon. That’s a summer itinerary with its priorities properly arranged.

Start With the Water

In Buford, Holiday Marina is a natural launch point. The marina sits near the southern end of Lake Lanier and has nearly 1,300 wet slips, plus a marina store for the inevitable forgotten sunscreen or boating supplies. Aqua Sports Adventures, located there, rents boats for families and groups ready to trade dry land for a few hours on the lake.

No boat? No problem. Buford Dam Park offers a small beach, picnic pavilions, shoreline scenery and a nearby fishing pier, while West Bank Park has tables, grills, shelters, a playground, walking trail and white-sand beach. Both make a strong case for packing lunch, grabbing the fishing poles and staying awhile.

For families looking to turn the dial up, Lanier Islands brings beaches, water activities, dining and plenty of ways to stretch a lake outing into a full-day affair. Bullfrog’s Bar & Grille is among the resort’s dining options when swimming starts losing the argument to hunger.

Dock, Dine, Repeat

Lake days tend to improve considerably when nobody has to cook. The Twisted Oar at Holiday Marina gives boaters a waterfront place to pull in for food and drinks before heading back out.

A short ride away in Flowery Branch, Fish Tales at Hideaway Bay Marina adds another dockside option, with seafood, drinks and the sort of easygoing atmosphere that pairs nicely with a day spent on Lanier.

That accessibility is what makes lake living particularly useful around Gwinnett. You don’t need a waterfront mortgage or a week off. You need a free Saturday, a cooler and perhaps a willingness to leave the schedule loose.

Summer won’t stick around forever. Lanier, thankfully, is close enough to make good use of what’s left.
