Senior Services Step It Up!
For Gwinnett seniors who want to stay active, independent, and close to home, a new round of county funding is putting more support behind the everyday services that make that possible.
The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners recently approved a $2.4 million Atlanta Regional Commission grant that will fund senior services through June 2027. Administered through the federal Older Americans Act, the money supports programs provided by the county’s Health and Human Services division.
Help Where It Counts
Those services cover a lot of ground, including case management, congregate and home-delivered meals, transportation, homemaking services, personal care, respite care, and senior recreation. Together, they tackle the practical pieces of remaining at home and involved in the community, whether that means getting to an appointment, having a meal delivered, or giving a family caregiver some breathing room.
The grant also comes with a local commitment. Gwinnett will provide a required match of $163,224.21 through the county’s General Fund.
This latest funding fits into a broader county effort to support older residents. Gwinnett has also used SPLOST dollars for senior-focused facilities and improvements, including senior center renovations, food-delivery trucks, buses, vehicles for homemakers, and expanded program space. Previous projects have touched communities including Buford, Norcross, Centerville, and Dacula.
The emphasis is practical, and that matters. A senior center is more useful when residents can get there. A meal program matters more when it reaches someone who cannot easily leave home. Respite care can make a difference for both the person receiving support and the family member providing it.
The Board of Commissioners approves county expenditures and policies, making funding decisions like this part of the larger work of determining how local resources reach residents.
