Smarter Streets Get the Green Light!
Most traffic lights don’t get much attention unless they’re holding you up. In Peachtree Corners, though, one intersection is learning to pay a little more attention to you.
LEOTEK has deployed its Interlux AI Traffic Signal System at Curiosity Lab, bringing another piece of emerging transportation technology onto actual Gwinnett roads instead of keeping it tucked away on a closed test track.
A Traffic Light With Homework
Interlux combines radar and camera sensing with NVIDIA edge AI computing and cellular vehicle-to-everything, or C-V2X, communication. In plain English, the system can recognize vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users while collecting information about traffic patterns and possible conflicts.
That information could eventually help transportation agencies do things such as adjust signal timing, monitor intersection safety, and give priority to emergency vehicles.
The important word here is eventually. The Peachtree Corners deployment is a real-world test, giving LEOTEK’s Interlux technology a chance to prove itself amid ordinary traffic, changing road conditions, and all the unpredictability that comes with an actual commute.
Curiosity Lab is particularly well suited for that job. Owned and operated by the City of Peachtree Corners, its three-mile smart city test corridor connects directly with public roads used by more than 14,000 vehicles each day. Companies can test technology alongside the people already driving, walking, and biking through the area.
From One Intersection to Bigger Ideas
For Gwinnett, that makes Curiosity Lab more than a showcase for futuristic gadgets. It gives companies a place to figure out whether ambitious ideas can handle everyday life before cities consider putting them to wider use.
LEOTEK plans to use what it learns in Peachtree Corners to refine Interlux for different urban environments and explore how the technology could expand beyond individual intersections into connected corridors and, potentially, citywide networks.
For now, Peachtree Corners gets a front-row seat as the humble traffic light gets a serious upgrade. One intersection is only the beginning; the lessons learned here could travel well beyond Gwinnett. Green means go, after all.
